5th Grade Drawing With Light

This project required a lot of planning, collaboration, and cooperation on the part of students.  They worked in groups of 2 or 3 to develop an idea for a contour drawing, and then spent a great deal of time practicing.  A time lapse photograph was taken in the dark as students drew in the air with cellophane covered flashlights, and other glowing objects.  The process was difficult, because students couldn't see what they were drawing; the flashlights had to point in the direction of the camera. They did a wonderful job, and the results are unique, and striking!

2nd Grade Picasso Portraits

Students looked at portraits created in different styles, and then examined artwork created by Picasso in his cubist style.   They had great fun creating facial features that were both geometric and asymmetrical!

1st Grade Kandinsky Paintings

These paintings were inspired by the work of Kandinsky.  Students first painted concentric circles, and then had fun adding patterns to their work.  They were very focused on how to hold the brush to create thin and thick lines.  Our painting surface was simple, but perfect for this project - a paper plate!

5th Grade Contour Drawings

To understand the concept of contour drawing, students took off their sneakers and traced them, creating an outline.  They observed their shoes very closely, adding cross contour lines, patterns, and then had fun with color.  These drawings were a big hit with everyone!

2nd Grade Alexander Calder Sculptures

Wow, it's March already!  I'm a bit behind on my blog, due to many hours spent on scenery for our upcoming musical.  Here are some really fun sculptures the kids made by cutting and intersecting card stock paper.  They looked at some of Calder's stabiles first for inspiration, and were surprised to discover that there is a Calder sculpture in the reflecting pool at the Empire State Plaza!
